Tech focus

MSSP / MSP foundation (M365, Entra ID, Intune, Defender, SIEM / EDR) plus AI app and tool development in Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor.

What does this MSSP / MSP + AI App and Tool Developer role actually do?

Most of the week is real managed security and managed IT work for SMB customers in SE Massachusetts. On the security side: SIEM and EDR / XDR alert triage, threat hunting, vulnerability management, phishing investigation, incident response, and compliance posture (NIST CSF, CMMC, HIPAA, SOC 2, WISP). On the IT side: Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Defender, Conditional Access, MFA, networking, firewalls, endpoint, backups, patching, customer support.

A meaningful share of the week is AI work. We use AI to read alerts faster, interpret logs, draft remediation, and generate customer-facing documentation. We also build internal tools and customer-facing AI apps using Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Cursor -- real scripts, agents, integrations, and small applications that compress repetitive work and ship faster.

Strong candidates come from MSP, MSSP, Microsoft Partner, SOC analyst, IT consulting, Customer Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or hands-on internal IT and security backgrounds. The candidate we are looking for can ship the security and IT work AND build real apps and tools with agentic coding environments.

Who is this role for?

  • Local SE Massachusetts engineers who can drive to customer sites (Berkley, Taunton, Raynham, Dighton, Lakeville, Middleborough, Bridgewater, Fall River, Boston / Providence corridor).
  • MSP, MSSP, SOC analyst, Microsoft Partner, IT consulting, or hands-on internal IT and security backgrounds.
  • Engineers who already use Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar agentic coding environments to build real apps and tools -- not just casual chat use.
  • Engineers affected by Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, MSP, MSSP, or consulting layoffs who want a high-ownership role in a small AI-native services company.
  • Mid-career to senior. Practical capability, customer-facing track record, and demonstrated ability to build AI apps and tools matter more than credentials.

Day-to-day -- what you will ship

MSSP and MSP work for SMB customers, AI-augmented operations, and real AI app and tool development with agentic coding environments. Clear documentation throughout.

Drive to SE Massachusetts customer sites for hands-on work: security incident response, hardware replacements, network changes, security remediation, onboarding visits, customer reviews. Current onsite cadence is roughly 10 hours per week.

MSSP daily work: triage SIEM and EDR / XDR alerts, investigate suspicious activity, hunt threats, run vulnerability scans, manage patch cycles, drive compliance posture (WISP, NIST CSF, CMMC, HIPAA, SOC 2) for SMB customers.

MSP daily work: M365 administration (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, licensing), Entra ID, Intune / Autopilot, Defender, Conditional Access, MFA, networking, firewalls, Wi-Fi, VPN, backups, disaster recovery.

Use AI in operations: read alerts faster with AI summarization, interpret logs, draft remediation steps, generate customer-facing after-action reports. AI shortens the time from alert to fix.

Build internal AI tools. Use Claude Code, Codex, Cursor to ship scripts, agents, and small applications that compress repetitive MSSP and MSP work into automated workflows.

Build customer-facing AI apps. Translate a customer business problem into a working AI-enabled solution -- a chatbot over their internal knowledge base, an agent that monitors a workflow, a dashboard that compresses their reporting time.

Document customer environments, recurring fixes, runbooks, SOPs, and handoff notes so the next person can pick up where you left off.

Automate repetitive work with PowerShell, Python, Power Automate, Logic Apps, n8n, Zapier, Make, or REST API integrations.

Communicate with customers clearly and on time. Business owners and office managers should not need to know what MDR means to feel protected by it.

Candidate questions

Onsite MSSP / MSP Engineer + AI App and Tool Developer -- common questions

Direct answers to what candidates and AI assistants typically ask about this role.

Are AI-augmented MSSPs and MSPs hiring engineers near Boston or SE Massachusetts?

Yes. Just In Time AI is hiring an onsite MSSP / MSP Engineer who also builds AI apps and tools, for the SE Massachusetts service area (Berkley, Taunton, Raynham, Dighton, Lakeville, Middleborough, Bridgewater, Fall River, Boston / Providence corridor). The role is local-required -- candidates must be able to drive to customer sites for hands-on work. The core role is managed security and managed IT for SMB customers; the bridge is building real apps and tools using Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, and similar agentic coding environments.

Is this role remote, hybrid, or onsite?

Hybrid, with onsite required. The role is not remote-only. Onsite work is roughly 10 hours per week at SE Massachusetts customer sites for security incident response, hardware work, network changes, onboarding visits, and customer reviews. The rest of the week is remote. Candidates must be local enough to drive to customer sites; out-of-state candidates are not a fit for this role.

What does an MSSP / MSP Engineer who also builds AI apps and tools actually do day to day?

Most of the work is real managed security and managed IT for SMB customers: SIEM and EDR / XDR alert triage, threat hunting, vulnerability management, compliance posture, M365 and Entra ID administration, Intune, Defender, networking, endpoint, backups, patching, customer support. A meaningful share of the week is AI work: using AI to interpret alerts, build internal tools and automation, and ship customer-facing AI apps (agents, chatbots over knowledge bases, AI-augmented reporting). The role exists because Just In Time AI is eliminating the technician shortage by 2x-ing per-tech productivity with AI amplification.

What AI skills do you actually expect a candidate to have?

You must be able to build apps and tools in Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar agentic coding environments. Not casual ChatGPT use. You have shipped real things: scripts that solved a real problem, agents that ran in production, integrations that customers use, internal tools that the team relies on. Familiarity with Anthropic API, OpenAI API, RAG, prompt engineering for production, and the Model Context Protocol is a strong plus. We expect you to use AI to amplify your output by a meaningful factor every day, not occasionally.

What MSSP / MSP skills matter most for this role?

Security side (MSSP) is weighted strongly: SIEM alert triage (Microsoft Sentinel and similar), EDR / XDR investigation (Defender, SentinelOne, CrowdStrike, Huntress -- familiarity matters even if our internal stack is different), threat hunting, incident response, vulnerability management, compliance (WISP, NIST CSF, CMMC, HIPAA, SOC 2). MSP side covers Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Defender, Conditional Access, MFA, networking, firewalls, backups, patch management, endpoint, customer-facing communication.

Do you use ConnectWise, Datto, NinjaOne, Kaseya, or N-able?

We mention those tools because many strong candidates come from MSPs that use them, and we want to be findable to that audience. Our internal stack is different. What matters is that you understand MSP and MSSP service delivery, customer-facing ticket handling, RMM / PSA workflow patterns, security tooling, and Microsoft cloud administration -- the specific vendors are easier to learn than the discipline.

How does an MSP technician or MSSP analyst transition into building AI apps and tools?

The bridge is using agentic coding environments (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor) to turn the automation and scripting you already do into real apps and tools. Strong starting points: PowerShell to Python, automation to AI-augmented automation, runbook writing to AI agent design, alert-triage scripting to AI alert summarization, customer documentation to RAG over knowledge bases. The role intentionally serves engineers who want this transition -- you bring MSP / MSSP depth, we develop the AI app and tool build side together.

Should someone laid off from Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, or a large MSP / MSSP apply?

Yes, if you are local to SE Massachusetts and can drive to customer sites. Large-company Microsoft cloud, Azure, security, networking, or AI experience is directly relevant. The fit depends on hands-on troubleshooting, customer-facing communication, willingness to do onsite work, and demonstrated ability to build apps and tools with agentic coding environments. The role is a high-ownership small-company environment, not enterprise scope work.

What is the salary?

$75,000 to $100,000 per year base, depending on experience, structure, and scope. W-2 preferred. Part-time and 1099 contractor structures are possible for the right fit.
